Monogram 7

Monogram 7 is a collective and individual double portret about history, materialism, spiritual matters and resistance. A few years ago, the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg opened a branch in Amsterdam. Russian tsars was the topic of the first exhibition. There, the Maid-of-honour monogram of Tsarina Alexandra Fjodorovna was one of the master pieces. A large monogram made of gold, silver, diamonds and glass reflected the wealth of a dynasty.

In Monogram 7, I made a composition of different elements: personal background and European history, matters concerning the faith of individuals and of a society. In other words a civilization balancing between high ideals  and material interests.

A family photograph of the ‘20s was the inspiration for the wedding couple.

The bottom of the monogram as a symbol of conservatism, materialism and power is anchored in the earth. The top of the letter “A” reaches the bride’s heart.

Behind the couple, an armour of feathers refers to polish Hussards. They fought in the past against their aggressors because they had to insure their own independence and survival. Feathers are a symbol of the resistance of minorities against their oppressors, in addition they are the symbol of spiritual freedom of mind.

In this painting, I used self-made sepia paint with oil painting on canvas to recollect the past. The atmosphere is loaded, dusty.

History repeats itself. On 2022 February 24th, Ukraine was attacked by Russia. The Hermitage branch in Amsterdam closed its doors in March 2022.
